SAN CARLOS CITY–Don’t look now but the city government has set its sights on being “the emerging tiger of North and Central Luzon”.

In his State of the City Address on Monday, Mayor Julier Resuello underscored the unprecedented gains in the city’s agro-industrial and commercial activities under his stewardship for the past three years.

He said the improved economic conditions in the city was realized despite dire predictions of detractors that commerce in the city will take a downspin as a consequence of the assassination of his father, then Mayor Julian Resuello, in April 2007.

The young Resuello who was then the vice mayor, took over the reins of the city government and eventually won in the election held that year.

“I distinctly remember how many of our critics predicted that when my father died in 2007, investors will stop coming and the old investors will leave San Carlos City,” he said.

But on the contrary, he said, new businesses came in and these include a shopping center, commercial banks, several motorcycle dealer companies, drugstore, convenience stores, watering holes and others.

The old investors stayed on, confident in the city’s resiliency and determination to hurdle the challenges and attributed the encouraging environment to the improved peace and order situation in the city.

He also cited the gains in the agricultural production in the last three years, contributing to increased incomes of farmers.

The healthy economy in the city, he said, transformed many farmers into entrepreneurs, trading their own produce, eliminating middlemen in the process.

Resuello also called attention to the effective delivery of social services, health and education programs.

The city government extended health insurance to 8,352 poor families through the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation.

On infrastructures, he said, the city government spent P239.1 million in concreting all barangay roads from 2007 to 2009 and another P101.8 million is set to be spent this year.
