Calmay River reclamation debunked
“We are not doing reclamation. Just retrieval.”
This was the retort of a representative of a private company, which has reportedly resumed reclamation activities along the Calmay River just beside the Jose de Venecia Expressway Extension.
The representative of 888 Properties Corporation was at the reclaimed area when City Legal Officer George Mejia went to check the report of The PUNCH that reclamation work there appears to have resumed due to the presence of a bulldozer.
There were mounds of fresh sand and gravel that were seen in the area before the arrival of the bulldozer.
Mejia said he was told that the company was actually “retrieving the sand and gravel” that it illegally dumped there sometime last year.
Mejia went to the site to check on the activity because the cease and desist order issued by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) against the company has not been lifted.
It was Mejia who accompanied EMB Technical Director Joel Salvador when the latter served the cease and desist order to the company in January last year.—LM
