3 De Venecia scholars graduated cum laude
SAN FABIAN–Three students from Barangay Anonang, San Fabian, recipients of scholarship grants from the De Venecia family, all graduated cum laude from the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in La Union recently.
All belonging to poor families, Mary Ann Agsaoay, Anna Marie Ruby Serran and Raymund Sanggalang earned their Bachelor of Science in Education degree and finished on top of their class.
Their feat has made their benefactors, 4th District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. and his wife Gina, proud and inspired to keep up with the program.
The De Venecias were surprised on Tuesday night when Agsaoay, Serran and Sanggalang turned up during a campaign rally of Mrs. De Venecia in Barangay Anonang to personally thank the couple for giving them a chance to go to college.
The three were among 15,000 other scholars in the Fourth District of Pangasinan who were beneficiaries of the De Venecia Scholarship Foundation, Inc. since the 70s.
Mrs. De Venecia, nicknamed Manay Gina, is running for the position that her husband is vacating after the maximum three terms.
Manay Gina said some of their other scholars have become successful lawyers, doctors, engineers, accountants, officers in the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police, teachers and others are now working in high-paying jobs abroad.
Sanggalang, the outspoken of the three, said his parents were both unemployed and he could not have gone to college to realize his dream to be a teacher were it not for the scholarship grant from the De Venecias.
“One thank you is not enough to express my gratitude. I really did my best, not to disappoint JDV (Jose de Venecia), Manay Gina and my parents, and not waste the opportunity”, Sanggalang said.—LM
