Villasis unfazed by El Nino
WHILE its neighboring town Sto. Tomas has already declared a state of calamity to mitigate the damage caused by the drought to its agriculture industry, Villasis town remains unfazed.
Mayor Nonato Abrenica said the town’s farmers continue to benefit from the continued efficiency of the irrigation system in their areas.
In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, the mayor said no farmer’s group has so far approached him for assistance in connection with the problems related to El Nino.
He noted the continued and uninterrupted delivery of same volume of agri products in the town’s Bagsakan market by the town’s farmers.
Abrenica expressed confidence that the town will not suffer as much from El Nino unlike its neighbors.
Earlier, about 80% of rice farms in other towns in eastern Pangasinan had been reported to be beyond recovery.
But notwithstanding the seeming widespread drought, the Department of Agriculture said earlier that it is still premature to declare Pangasinan under a state of calamity, noting the prevalence of conditions similar to Villasis.
Gov. Amado Espino Jr. already started distributing portable water pumps to the irrigators association of the province, particularly in eastern Pangasinan.
