Sta. Barbara folk hail Mayor Velasco, “champion in public service”
Multi-sectoral groups in the town of Sta. Barbara have banded together recently to express their gratitude to incumbent Mayor Reynaldo Velasco for “a job well done”, describing him as their “champion in public service”.
Farmers, students, community leaders, health workers, small businessmen and other residents who benefited from the mayor’s performance have expressed similar sentiments noting how he exceeded the targets he set in his 10-point action agenda described in the acronym REY VELASCO.
“Salamat Mayor sa ibinalik mong patubig sa aming sakahan na di naming pinakinabangan ng mahigit na 20 taon,”said Ed Murante, a farmer leader.
“He delivered peace, prosperity and wholesome environment to our town,” one student exclaimed.
In his third year as mayor, Mayor Velasco completed the rehabilitation of the town’s irrigation system that allowed water to flow into 3,000 hectares of farmlands, giving farmers the opportunity to engage in three cropping seasons a month from only one cropping in the past. He also modernized farm practices and brought in the first rice post-harvest storage and processing facilities in his town.
School teacher Gertudes Fernandez, said great strides in education happened in the past three years when the mayor built 288 new “Victorey” school buildings in Sta. Barbara, a feat considered the first in Pangasinan.
“Sa pag-upo ni Mayor Velasco, buong bayan ang panalo,” the educator noted.
The mayor was also praised as the town’s “champion” who delivered infrastructure projects, including flood control dikes, roads and bridges worth P150 million, which was unprecedented in the history of the town.
Considered a major accomplishment of Mayor Velasco was the construction of flood control dikes that have since tamed two rivers that perennially submerged the town of Sta. Barbara for months in previous years after each typhoon.
Beneficiaries of the 84 units of houses, constructed in partnership with Gawad Kalinga in his first term, were also one in praise of Mayor Velasco. The successful pilot project provided low-cost housing program for the town’s homeless families.
Mayor Velasco also partnered with private groups like PCCI, Phil Export and San Miguel Corporation in setting up livelihood projects to ensure their viability.
As may have been expected from a former three–star police director, Mayor Velasco fully supported the activities that lent to the improved effectiveness of the town’s police force, including the construction of a new police sub-station, the purchase of new mobile patrols and equipment. All made it possible for the town enjoy an almost zero crime rate in his town.
The townsfolk also lauded the strong sense of duty he has instilled in the town’s government workers that made possible the efficient delivery of frontline services from processing of business and personal documents to the delivery of health and social services to barangays, including the distribution of PhilHealth coverage for over 5,000 indigent families.
