Pangasinan, highest in rabies cases

HERE is a case where being number one is not a good thing.

In the last three years, Pangasinan has been the top province in terms of the number of positive animal rabies cases, according to records of the Philippine Animal Health Center under the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI).

Dr. Catherine Simon, a veterinarian at the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory under the Department of Agriculture, said samples regularly submitted to the BAI indicate that from 2007 to 2009, dogs and cats in the province have a positive rabies rate of 21- 22 percent.

Simon called on pet owners to have their dogs and cats that are more than three months old vaccinated to avoid causing harm to humans.

She pointed out that the risk is particularly high during the summer months when more children are bitten by dogs or cats.

“The key here is responsible pet ownership,” Simon told The PUNCH as she underscored that that March is Rabies Awareness Month in the country.

Towns and cities reported to have the highest rabies cases were the cities of San Carlos, Urdaneta, Dagupan and the towns of Bani, Agno, and Sta. Barbara.#
