ARMED with a strong determination and physical energy to defy the sweltering heat of the day, two unheralded but well-trained riders from Nueva Ecija scored an unexpected and amazing 1-2 fashion victory in the “OO Na, Noynoy Na” bikefest held March 23 from Subic to Dagupan City.

Little-known Alfredo Asuncion cut loose from his two breakaway partners in the last 200 meters to win by a bike length against province-mate Jay Tolentino and Tarlaqueno Tomas Martinez to pocket the P20,000 top prize.

Tolentino, who settled for second, bagged P15,000 while Martinez landed third worth P10,000.

The three clocked the 245-kilometer race through flat and hilly treks under a scorching heat from Subic, Zambales to Dagupan City in six hours, 23 minutes and two seconds.

The race route traversed 13 towns of Zambales, and eight towns and two cities in Pangasinan

Composing the top ten that received medals and also cash prizes were Ericson Obosa of Manaoag, Arnel Quirimit of Pozorrubio, Daniel Asto of Tarlac, Renier Clauna of Bugallon, Emelito Atilano of Basista, Reynaldo Navarro of San Jacinto and Joseph Millanes of Tarlac.

Dagupan Mayor Al Fernandez Jr., assisted by ASAHAN party-list chairman Jun Omar Ebdane, the sponsor of the event, together with councilors Chito Samson and Michael Fernandez and project director Jun Velasco awarded the prices.

The event lured a star-studded group of 58 starters and ended with 30 finishers.–JAGJr.
