LINGAYEN–It will be the “mother of all Pangasinan events”.

The celebration of Agew na Pangasinan on April 5, the first time that the province will mark its founding day, will be grand as it is intends to “strengthen the identity of every Pangasinense”, according to Gov. Amado Espino Jr.

The governor said the new provincial seal and historical marker that will depict the year 1580 as the foundation date will be unveiled during the commemorative program.

Pangasinan’s foundation day was earlier determined by a research and study committee as April 5, 1580, and a provincial ordinance declaring April 5 as official public holiday in Pangasinan was subsequently issued.

The celebration will start with a thanksgiving mass and will be highlighted by the inauguration of the newly upgraded Sison Auditorium, dubbed as Cultural Center of Northern Luzon, and the groundbreaking of the Lingayen Eco-Tourism Zone in Barangay Estanza.

Parada na Dayew Mi, a float and civic parade, will also be held featuring 13 floats that showcase the important historical eras of the province.

These are: pre-Spanish period (1572; 1574; 1580), the Revolt against the Spaniards, establishment of Casa Real, Pangasinan Katipuneros led by Don Daniel Maramba, Phil-American war (1899), Taft Commission (1901), Inauguration of Capitol building (1919), Japanese invasion (1941), Landing of Gen. Mc Arthur (1945), and the Golden Era envisioned by Espino.

The first ASNA Awards Night and Ball will be held in the evening at the Sison Auditorium with former Governor Conrado Estrella as guest of honor and speaker.

ASNA awards aims to give recognition and focus public attention to outstanding Pangasinenses whose selfless dedication to their profession or vocation has resulted in “outstanding contributions to the welfare of the people in Pangasinan and to the country.”

Arabela Arcinue, chairperson of the awards committee, said former President Fidel V. Ramos will be given a special award for being the most senior leader and the only full-blooded Pangasinense to become President.

There will be 11 awards to be given under various categories, including government service, community service, arts and culture, medicine, agriculture, mass communications, business and entrepreneurship, law, education, science and technology, and sports.
