Jazy, Nardo triumph in Mangaldan bikefest

VETERAN cyclists Jazy Garcia and Eduardo Nardo used their experience and skills to out-speed their respective rivals in the Mangaldan town fiesta bicycle road race held on March 7.

The Guam-based, Mangaldan-born Garcia, 42, topped the first event of the day, the 90-kilometer B category (for 40 years old and above) with 57 participants by outsprinting his two breakaway foes in the last 300 meters to bag the P5,000 top prize.

Visiting Alex Billan from Manila, winner of the 2006 edition, finished second worth P4,000 while  Marlboro Tour veteran Oscar Espiritu came in third to pocket P3,000.

The three broke away after the third round of five all the way to the finish despite the relentless pursuit of the pursuing second group. Ysmael Gendrano and Ruel Gendrano landed fourth and fifth and received P2,000 and P1,000, respectively. Rounding up the top ten were Hector Padilla, Wilson Rosetes, Benigno Molina, Tony Aspel and Joe Maramba.

In the category A event (17 to 39 years old) with 68 contestants, tour veteran Eduardo Nardo of San Manuel, Pangasinan bested his nine breakaway partners in the last 50 meters to bring home the P5,000 top reward. His townmate Ryan Cantor came in a close second and Novo Ecijano Anthony del Rosario from Guimba town placed third.

San Fabian son Rene Esteban and Taguig City resident Arnel de Jesus finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Composing the top ten were Rustom Lim, Arlex Tembreza, Oliver Columbino, Elmer Atilano and Virgilio Muena.

The main sponsors of the annual bikefest this year were Excellent Noodles, Oishi Products by Liwayway Marketing, Jazy Sportswear, supported by Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr., Dagupan City Mayor Al Fernandez, Public Works and Highways second engineering district head Engr. Rodolfo Dion, and Bonuan Gueset barangay chair Angel Gumarang.
