City vows support for cervical cancer awareness
In celebration of Women’s Month
THE Dagupan City government, as part of the celebration of “Women’s Month”, has pledged its full support in the fight against cervical cancer.
Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. said the city will join several non-government organizations in information dissemination programs aimed at increasing awareness about the ailment.
The city will collaborate with the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network Program (CEPAP), the Cancer Institute Foundation, Incorporation (CIF), and Bravehearts, a multi-disciplinary crusade for cervical cancer prevention and treatment.
Meanwhile, city hall announced that the Tour of Hope Philippines 2010, a cycling event aimed at creating awareness towards cervical cancer, will make a stop in Dagupan on March 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at the Dagupan City Museum to conduct a lecture on cervical cancer.
He urged all female government employees and residents to attend the lecture Data from the Philippine Cancer Society revealed that cancer of the cervix is the 2nd killer disease among Filipino women as it continues to claim the lives of 10 Filipino women every day.
“Just imagine how many kids are being orphaned each day,” Fernandez said.
Fernandez echoed the groups’ mission saying that effective information dissemination continues to be key in the race to diagnose and treat cervical cancer, which is in fact highly preventable and an early detection could spell a big difference in treatment.
“If we educate our women on the ways on how we can prevent the killer disease, we can not only save women’s lives but also protect their children and families,” the mayor said.–LM
