ALAMINOS CITY–A senior student at the Alaminos City National High School bagged the “Outstanding Award for Presentation of Exhibit” in a recent science research project competition among students in Southeast Asia.

Shairaine Nieves Catabay, with coach Adolfo Medrano, bested 36 other entries that were part of the Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists organized by the Southeast Asian Ministries of Education Organization Regional Center for Education in Science and Mathematics (SEAMEO RECSAM).

The competition, with the theme “Sustainable Solutions for the Local Community”, was held in Penang, Malaysia last March 5.

Catabay’s investigatory project, entitled “Preliminary Analysis of Water Quality Parameters and Population Density of Chironomous sp as Pollution Bio-indicator”, featured the testing and analysis of the water in three rivers in Alaminos City.

The rivers in Tococ, Sabangan and Bogtong, were found contaminated based on their respective turbidity level, pH level, dissolved oxygen level and population density using chironomous sp as bio-indicator.

The project, a brainchild of Catabay (with Elvie Ngayawon and Paolo Alcantara, both college students) also received the International Corporate Award by the American Meteorological Society in February 2009 during the 2009 National INTEL Philippines Science Fair in Subic, Zambales.

The project was chosen as the Philippines’ official entry from among 15 other entries submitted by students around the country, including prestigious special science schools in the capital.#
