A special place for Magsaysay bust at city hall
MAYOR Alipio Fernandez Jr. has directed the installation of the commemorative bust of the late President Ramon Magsaysay at the main entrance of the City Hall complex, alongside the bust of the late President Manuel L. Quezon.
Fernandez said the city should perpetuate the memory of one of the country’s best-loved presidents.
“Magsaysay’s legacy of heroism and service should continue to inspire our corps of civil servants as well as generations of young people. We should always be reminded that each of us bears a moral obligation to make our society good and just,” Fernandez said.
City planning and development officer Romeo Rosario said the relocation of Magsaysay’s bust is part of the ongoing major repair, renovation and restoration efforts of city hall.
The former president’s sculpture used to be mounted in front of the Magsaysay Park that was converted as site of a commercial complex authorized by the administration of former Mayor Benjamin Lim.
When the commercial complex was built, the bust of Magsaysay was kept at the city engineering compound where, Rosario said, “he became almost a non-entity”.
“There may be ambivalence about heroes, yet we should look back to his examples. Magsaysay has shown that challenges confronting us demand nothing less than solutions of heroic proportions and abilities,” Fernandez said.—LM
