A LITTLE-KNOWN amateur rider from San Manuel town was first to cross the finish line to win the Bataoil Cycling Challenge, Tour de Segundo Distrito held January 24.

The 21 year-old Juancho Callorina broke away from the five-man lead pack 22 kilometers into the finish with blistering speed that the four others could not keep up with. He rode all by his lonesome up to the finish and received a big applause from the huge crowd across the municipal hall of Mangatarem, the host town for the race.

Aside from pocketing the P7,000 top prize, Callorina also topped the summit sprint worth P1,000.

The champion negotiated the 158-kilometer flat trek that passed the eight towns of the second district of Pangasinan twice, in four hours, 18 minutes and 18 seconds. He was 52 ticks ahead of the four-man second pack led by Rex Carino in a mad-dash sprint finish.

Callorina’s town mate Renato Bandong, 29, came in third.

Rounding up the top ten were: Aljon Pedeglorio, Robinson Esteves, Adrian Malanum, Arlex Tembreza, Oliver Columbino, Benson Camat and John Ray Gabat.

The pedal-by-pedal account was aired live over DZRD Sonshine Radio 981 Khz AM.—JAGJr.
