PAMMA clobbers AIE, wins crown
FEROCIOUS and composed when it mattered, the well-prepared PAMMA Blue Dragons team clobbered archenemy AIE-Commerce Golden Eagles squad, 88-68, to clinch the crown of the First Jimmy Fernandez Cup Collegiate Invitational Basketball Championship held on February 17 at the DWAD gym in Dagupan City.
The Blue Dragons demolished the Golden Eagles, 85-78, in the first game of their best-of-three championship series, but succumbed in the second clash, 84-76, forging a rubber match, which resulted in an unexpected lopsided victory, their first championship in the province.
The Dragons, determined and furious, started fast and never relinquished their lead in the first two quarters, 39-30, with prolific guard Roel Mark Caoile and forward Melchor dela Pena taking charge, scoring 12 points each.
The Dragons already appeared headed for victory in the third quarter when they led by 26 points, 68-42.
“Unlike our second game of the series, it was a nice work and play this time, our defense rattled and caught the Eagles off-guard,” said Dragons coach Ramil Aquino.
He said the team’s tune-up game, which they won, 86-76, Tarlac City last week helped his players stay in shape.
Caoile scored a game high 23 points and most of them done inside the lane. Dela Pena contributed 16.
On the losing side, Richard de Guzman had a team high 16 points and the league’s MVP Jeffrey Yanez contributed 12.
The two-month tourney was sponsored by the CSI Group of Companies and co-sponsored by Milo Energy Drinks and Jigs Seen.–JAGJr.
