URBIZTONDO–The residents of Barangay Bayaoas here, considered as one of the most impoverished barangays in Pangasinan, may soon enjoy a better standard of living through the Kabalikat Laban sa Kahirapan (Kalahi) program.

A Kalahi caravan sortie was undertaken in Barangay Bayaoas last week where the participating agencies signed a declaration of commitment to the program.

Among the commitments are the provision of high school and college scholarship grants, mobile education to out-of-school youth and free school learning assistance to drop-out students so they could pursue college education.

Various government agencies led by the provincial government have joined the Kalahi, a project launched by the national government to help reduce poverty in the countryside.

The Provincial Planning Development Office (PPDO) headed by Benita Pizzaro, has created the Pangasinan Poverty Reduction Action Team (PPRAT) to oversee the program.

The PPRAT team is composed of 9 offices of the provincial government.

Communal toilets and deep wells will be constructed and two units of water purifier will be installed in the town school.

A jobs fair will be conducted in March to match more than 300 unemployed barangay residents with available jobs.

The Pangasinan Federation of Non-Government Organizations (PFNGOs) headed by Carmelita Duque will conduct free cataract operations for children.
