Comelec removes campaign posters

“OPERATION Baklas”, launched by the Provincial Election Office last February 16, removed tons of campaign materials posted by supporters of national candidates in places outside the designated common poster areas.

Provincial Election Officer Reddy Balarbar said these posters were removed because they violated Comelec rules.

Most of the posters, he said, were nailed on trees or electric posts, hung on telephone and electric wires, and pasted on walls and fences.

Balarbar said “Operation Baklas” will be pursued zealously through out the campaign period to strictly enforce election and campaign rules and teach candidates and their supporters “ to respect the law”.

He stressed that there are designated common poster areas in every barangay where supporters of candidates may place campaign materials.

Balarbar said the claim of supporters that nobody knows where the common poster areas are, is “flimsy”.

So far, only posters of national candidates have been removed. The campaign period for national positions started on February 9.

For local positions, the campaign period will officially start on March 26 but posters of local candidates can already be seen in many areas, most of which, said Balarbar, are also in wrong places. He said these will also be targeted by “Operation Baklas” when the local campaign period starts.—LM
