ALAMINOS CITY–Cosmetic products from China believed to contain heavy metal mercury were confiscated last week in the cities of Alaminos and Dagupan.

Elements of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) regional office, with the help of sanitary inspectors, seized aboutĀ 171 boxes of the health-risk products from beauty and health shops, and bazaars.

Renato Padilla, FDA regional supervisor, told The PUNCH that the confiscated goods, tagged as banned items, include various creams under the brand label Jiaoli.

The confiscated products, deemed poisonous, corrosive and non-biodegradable, will be turned over to the FDA head office

In a related development, the FDA regional office based in La Union also confiscated several boxes of Zhen-de-shou fatless capsule and tea, which is marketed for its supposed slimming effect.

Padilla said the FDA will take legal action against theĀ importers of these items while those selling in the retail market were not held liable since they were not aware of the status of the products.#
