THE Dagupan City Health Office reported on Thursday that the meningococcemia scare in Barangay Bonuan Boquig, where a four-month old baby boy who died on January 30 with suspected symptoms of the disease, is now over.

City Health Officer Dr. Leonard Carbonell said the boy’s parents and other people he had contact with have undergone voluntary isolation and have taken prophylactic medicines.

Their voluntary isolation ended on Thursday with no second hand infection observed.

Carbonell said since the four-day incubation period of the disease has already lapsed, the danger of the spread of the disease is already over.

However, the baby’s parents have been advised by Carbonell to continue their isolation until February 9.

At the same time, Carbonell clarified that until the result of a blood culture test is out, the baby cannot be confirmed to have died from meningococcemia.

The baby was reported to have died just an hour after coming from a private hospital where he was diagnosed to be suffering from viral inspection.

The baby was not admitted and only given medicines to take at home.

Carbonell said the baby’s parents were advised to bury their son within 12 hours after his death pursuant to the protocol issued by the Department of Health to ensure that the rest of the community will not be infected.

The baby and his parents were found to have no history of travel but the mother brought the baby to another house where other neighbors were also visiting.

Carbonell thanked the barangay officials of Bonuan Boquig led by Barangay Captain Alfredo Quinto Jr. for their full cooperation and support in containing the disease even if it was yet to be established as a case of meningococcemia.—LM
