Urdaneta to offer free two-month rent in market
URDANETA CITY—Hoping to attract more business at the second floor of the Urdaneta Public Market, the city government is considering giving out a two-month free stall rent offer to traders.
City Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said a draft proposal on this plan, to be submitted to the city council is being prepared.
The second floor of Buildings A and B of the market, which was built a couple of years ago, remain partially occupied as traders do not seem to be too keen on the area which is perceived to be less frequented by consumers as compared to the ground floor area.
Perez said the payment for the monthly amortization on the loan acquired to construct the market is already well covered by rentals of stalls in their first floors, “but we still want to earn additional income from the market, that is why we will experiment by offering stalls with two months free rental”.
Fifth District Rep. Mark Cojuangco is also helping the city boost business activity on the second floor of both buildings by funding the construction of a footbridge with an escalator from the other side of the MacArthur Highway leading to the market.
The P10 million funding for the project, however, has yet to be released.
A planned second footbridge had to be shelved for lack of space to accommodate it. The fund intended for it will instead be used to purchase traffic lights.
Building A of the public market is a three-storey structure with an elevator and an escalator while Building B is a four-storey structure with parking on the third and fourth floors. —LM
