UPH launches scholarship program for Pangasinan

The United Pangasinan of Hawaii (UPH) recently launched a scholarship program for high school graduates in Pangasinan to promote academic and scholastic excellence to assist the financially handicapped but deserving, outstanding and talented students in both public and private high schools in Pangasinan.

According to Fred Martinez, committee chairman, the UPH Scholarship Program Committee will accept applications from high school graduates (public and private high schools) from four cities and 24 towns namely Alaminos City, Alcala, Anda, Asingan, Balungao, Bani, Binalonan, Bolinao, Bugallon, Burgos, Calasiao, Dagupan City, Laoac, Lingayen, Malasiqui, Manaoag, Mangaldan, Mapandan, Natividad, Rosales, San Carlos City, San Fabian, San Manuel, San Quintin, Santa Barbara, Tayug, Umingan, and Urdaneta City.

The UPH Scholarship Program Committee will select 10 students based on its evaluation of applications.  The number will be increased to 40 in 2013.

Members of the committee are Sally Agas, Susan Martinez, Cely Querido, Gavy Baricaua, Floro Dioquino, Leo Limos and Sal Maza.

UPH is headed by Brillo Villareal, president.

Applicants must pass the PSU College Admission Test and satisfy the requirements of PSU for admission (http://www.psu.edu.ph/).

Scholars will be entitled to full tuition fee for the first semester of the first academic year. In succeeding semesters, scholars with a general weighted average of 1.0 to 1.75 (or its equivalent) will receive full tuition fee with allowance per semester and those with 2.0 to 2.50 (or its equivalent) will receive full tuition fee with no allowance.

Deadline for submission of accomplished application form is May 30, 2010 and should be mailed to Alfred V. Martinez, chairperson, United Pangasinan of Hawaii Scholarship Program, 1325 Ala Alii Street, Honolulu, HI 96818 (or by email: fmartinez@hawaii.rr.com.

To qualify, student must be Filipino Citizen residing in Pangasinan;.Not more than 23 years old at the time of application; Fourth Year High School weighted grade average of at least 85% with no final grade lower than 82% in any subject; Of good moral character and demonstrates leadership, demonstrates proficiency in writing and speaking; Must write an essay on regarding your aims and ambitions after graduation from college; include plans for your hometown or province.  Essay must be NOT LESS than 200 words but NOT MORE than 500 words.
