Pogo Grande’s “High Noon” blast draws crowd

All roads led to Dagupan City’s Barangay Pogo Grande noontime of January 1 to watch some 100,000 different types of firecrackers, strung together over a kilometer stretch, lit up.

The occasion was the barangay’s traditional event gathering and lighting up all unsold and saved firecrackers every high noon on the first day of January.

Pogo Grande is known as the “little Bocaue, Bulacan” where as many families here are involved in the business of firecracker production.

A benefactor in the community usually pays for most of the firecrackers used for the event while other households also donate or contribute their unlit firecrackers to the effort.

This year, the unsold firecrackers were estimated to be worth P300,000.

Notably, no injuries were ever reported since the tradition was started as safety measures are strictly observed.

The event requires the presence of a fire truck (from the Panda Firefighting Brigade) to follow the line of explosion and ensure that no property or person gets burned in the process.

Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr., assisted by Pogo Grande Barangay Chairman George Galvan, lit the first firecracker to set off the kilometer long string of firecracker unique tradition, which is said to be even noisier than the New Year Eve celebration.

Galvan said the event is enjoyed by the community and the balikbayans who come home for the Christmas holidays and the Dagupan City fiesta. —LM
