DENR issues alert versus forest fires
BEWARE of forest fires!
This was the call of Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Leduina Co to barangay officials and residents of upland communities.
Co issued the warning in view of the expected long hot summer that may result in fires within the few remaining forest covers in the western and eastern parts of the province.
All Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENROs) were ordered by Co to undertake an information drive to alert upland communities about the threat and what can be done to avoid it.
She also urged barangay officials of the upland communities to establish a system for recording the names of all those entering lands or climbing mountains in order to help monitor and trace forest fire culprits.
She pointed out that the current dry and windy weather condition in Pangasinan contributes to the possibility of forest and bush fires.
A still-lit cigarette butt thrown away into a heap of dry leaves could easily ignite fires under this condition, she said.
BIRD CENSUS
Meanwhile, Co also announced that her office is now conducting a water bird census in Pangasinan.
Water birds include herons and egrets, many of which are migratory and have originated from cold countries in the northern hemisphere.
Migratory birds, including the indigenous ones, are teeming in Binmaley, Alaminos, Bani, Bolinao, Dasol, Anda, Bayambang and San Manuel.
The project, she said, is part of the commitment of the Philippines to the international community to help protect migratory birds.–LM
