12th National Mango Congress set Feb. 24-26
LINGAYEN–The 12th National Mango Congress will be hosted for the first time by Pangasinan through the Federation of Mango Growers and Handlers Association of Pangasinan, Inc. (FMGHAPI) on February 24-26 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center here.
The event’s theme is “Maximizing Mango Growers’ Income thru Cheaper Farm Inputs and Thru Processing of Pre and Post Harvest Rejects.”
Governor Amado Espino Jr. said the Congress is a good opportunity for the province’s mango industry to showcase and improve its capabilities as the largest mango producer of the country, contributing 40% to the total national mango production.
With more than 500 expected participants nationwide, the Congress will feature seminar-workshops aimed at helping mango growers save at least 12% from rejects, or an equivalent of about P200 million a year from mango output which are otherwise put to waste.
Patricio Evangelista, president of the FMGHAPI, expressed optimism that the Congress will help the 31 municipal associations and various cooperatives in the province to come up with a plan to establish mango processing centers at the village level.
Other activities include trade fair exhibits, mango processing demos and mango-based pastry and beverage-making contests.
The participants will also be given a tour around the Provincial Capitol, the Sual-Coal Fired Power Plant, Hundred Islands in Alaminos, Manaoag Shrine, San Fabian PTA, Anjo Farms, Calasiao , Bolinao, Bani, Sison vegetable farm and the Pozorrubio Mango Farm.
The event is being organized by the Philippine Mango Industry Foundation, Inc., with the support of the provincial government of Pangasinan, Department of Agriculture, Agriculture and Fishery Council I, Municipal Government of Lingayen, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Tourism, Trade and Industry.
Some local government units and non-government organizations are also lending support.–LM
