Scientist, engineers badly needed in RP
ROSALES—Only 105 out of one million Filipinos are scientists and engineers, way below the ideal 380 per one million, according to the presidential assistant for Northern Luzon who spoke during the opening program of the 2009 Northern Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair Thursday at the SM City Rosales.
Dr. Enrie A. Mendoza II lamented how the country pales in comparison with its neighbors like China as to the number of leaders who are grade scientists and engineers, a contributing factor to the rapid growth of that nation he said.
Mendoza urged the government to establish more science and technology schools in every province and give a bigger allocation for research and development initiatives.
The weeklong science and technology fair of the Department of Science and Technology featured exhibits and a bazaar for small and medium enterprises assisted by the department.
Technical sessions, trainings and robotics were also conducted.—PIA
