Pangsinan tops gun amnesty program
LINGAYEN—A total of 3,891 unlicensed firearms were registered in the province under the government’s gun amnesty program from August 1 to November 30, representing a 30% accomplishment rate based on estimated unlicensed firearms in the province.
Senior Superintendent Percival Barba, police provincial director, said the registration generated more than P3 million in fees for both new registrations and renewals.
“I think we are number one again in Region 1 in terms of income gene-rated and the number of firearms registered,” Barba said.
He added that he is optimistic that Pangasinan will also be among the top in the list at the national level.
Out of the registered number, 1,528 were initially considered ‘̂loose firearms’, while un-renewed licensed firearms, meaning those that have been previously registered with expired licenses, 2,363 were renewed out of the estimated 10,430.
Owners of unregistered firearms paid P1,000 each gun while those with un-renewed guns paid P650 each for their papers.
Barba sent more than 8,000 letters to gun owners in Pangasinan to encourage them to avail of the amnesty program.
With the amnesty period over, the police is now applying for search warrants against suspected holders of unlicensed guns.#
