Pangasinan has women-empowered districts
MAKE way for the women.
For the first time in the province’s history, all the six congressional districts have women candidates for the May 2010 election, and all of them carry prominent names in the political arena.
In the1st District, national television broadcaster Ma. Judea “Maki” Pulido, whose parents are already both elected local government officials, is joining politics for the first time aiming for a seta in Congress under Partido ng Masang Pilipino (PMP)-Biskeg.
Another female congressional bet in the 1st District is Christine Jimenez of Aksyon Demokratiko.
They will slug it out with Burgos Mayor Domingo Doctor Jr. (NP), Vladimir Mauricio Mabalot III (independent), former Bolinao mayor Jesus Celeste (Lakas), and Danilo Dizon (LP).
2nd DISTRICT
The 2nd District has Maria Blanca “Kim” Lokin, also a former television broadcaster and former partylist congresswoman who will be up against Dr. Jamie Eloise Agbayani under the LP ticket, wife of the incumbent Rep. Victor Agbayani who is making a comeback in the gubernatorial race.
They will be opposed by retired police general Leopoldo Bataoil (Lakas-Biskeg), Nestor Reyes (NP- -Biskeg) and Arsenio Merrera (NP).
ARENAS-SORIANO REMATCH in 3rd D
The 3rd District will have re-electionist Rep. Ma. Rachel Arenas, the only elected congresswoman in the 2007 elections, under Lakas- Kampi-Cmd-Biskeg.
She will again face lawyer Gallant Soriano under LP, who filed an election protest against her in the last election.
MANAY VS. MANANG IN 4TH D
“Gina de Venecia, wife of outgoing Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr., and Celia “Manang Celia” Lim, wife of former congressman and Dagupan mayor Benjamin Lim will face each other in the 4th district.
Manay Gina would have run unopposed after Land Transportation Office chief Arturo Lomibao decided to back out from the race.
Manang Celia, a surprise candidate, describes herself as a simple businesswoman with good intentions to serve the people.
Her son, Brian, said this is a fight for principled politics. “Can you imagine the district having an unopposed candidate? That’s not an exercise of democracy. We need people who have good intentions, who are genuine Pangasinenses, it must not be only one to choose from.”
Manay Gina is running under the NPC banner while Manang Celia is an independent candidate.
5TH, 6th DISTRICTS
Sison town Mayor Kimi Cojuangco of the NPC is eyeing to take over the post of her husband, Rep. Mark Cojuangco.
She will fight it out with Demetrio Demetria and Martin Faoilan, both independent bets.
Meanwhile, Vice Gov. Marlyn Primicias-Agabas of the NPC will run in the sixth district against Presidential Management Staff Secretary Hermogenes Esperon Jr. (Lakas-Biskeg) and Eduardo Libatique (PMP).
Lawyer Reddy Balarbar, provincial election officer, confirmed this is indeed the first time that women candidates in all the six districts are seeking congress seats.#
