Working for the best in 2010

THE last quarter of 2009 was particularly trying for us with typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng” wreaking unprecedented destruction in many parts of the country, including the capital Metro Manila and right here in Pangasinan. And so we bid goodbye to this year with both a sigh of relief and a sense of accomplishment because once again our resilience has been tested and we have lived up to the challenge.

At the same time, we recognize that there is still a lot of work needed for reconstruction of infrastructure and the rebuilding of lives. As the private and public sectors jointly undertake this gargantuan task, we also turn our attention to the major national event for 2010 – the elections.

As we welcome the New Year, it’s no longer enough for us to wish for the best but resolve to work for what we want for ourselves. We must aim to finally install a new brand of politics – the kind where politicians running for elected positions realize that government work is not about accumulation of riches, personal power and privileges but true public service and good governance.

We need to have peaceful and successful elections. We must not allow “failed elections” to become an option even as we are about to try poll automation for the first time. We must all do our bit to ensure this. Now more than ever, we need to have a more proactive role from the electorate – our responsibility is not just to vote but to ensure that our vote is protected. There is a growing movement around the country on citizen participation – there is work to do in educating the public before the election, watching our vote on election day, and keeping tabs during the country – each one of us can share in the tasks

We need to install a corrupt-free and dynamic new political leadership in both national and local levels. We want a government that has a vision and a roadmap that will work towards social and economic improvement as well as one that will help us in the worst of times.  The vote is in our hands.

With faith in God, we make a prayer for a less destructive year ahead of us. With faith in ourselves, we make a promise for a better future by being vigilant, be more discerning by getting move involved in community affairs and above all, keeping our vote sacred.
