A 16-year old rider from Nueva Ecija conquered the 3rd Gen. Bataoil – Garcia Cup bikefest held December 20

The little known Rustom Lim was a surprise champion after he defeated the region’s prominent amateur riders by launching an exceptional breakaway at the neutral zone mark.

He lead a pack of 50 participants and sustained his killing pace up to the finish, out-speeding Ilocos Sur standout Melvin Mendoza in the last 200 meters to pocket the P7,000 top prize.

The two covered the 126-kilometer all-amateur flat trek race that passed key places in the second, third and fourth districts of Pangasinan with an identical time of three hours, 11 minutes and 18 seconds.

They were only just 12 seconds ahead of the rampaging 30-man second pack led by San Manuel-born Edmundo Nicolas who finished third.

Joel Crisostomo and Ricky Zabala, both from Laoac, checked in fourth and fifth.

Rounding up the top ten were: Daniel Asto, Robinson Esteves, Wilbert Biagtan, Jerome Diaz and John Ray Gabay.

In the master-executive division, the rejuvenated Manaoag son Jovy Jovellanos executed a masterful race from start to finish to rule the 24-man contest.

Dagupeno veteran pedal pusher Joe Maramba came in close second while Mangaldanon aging biker Diony Aquino landed third.

Rounding up the top ten were: Salvador Toralba, Alfonso Clauna, Wendel del Campo, Lito Rabot, Oscar Espiritu, Mon Nicolas and Robert Sagun.

The annual bikefest was principally sponsored by retired police general Leopoldo N. Bataoil and supporters of retired cyclist Jesus Garcia Jr.

The pedal-by-pedal account was aired live over DZRD Sonshine Radio 981 Khz AM.–JAGJr.
