Province’s organic fertilizer boosts farmers’ revenues
LINGAYEN–The local agricultural sector received another boost from the provincial government through the latter’s free distribution of its newly developed organic fertilizers to local farmers.
The cheap but effective fertilizer that uses chicken manure as base, initially sourced from the poultry farm of Governor Amado Espino Jr. in Barangay Portic, Bugallon, was developed by the provincial government.
The chicken manure, as basic input, is now being converted into a bio-organic fertilizer in a modest processing plant, using the bio-technology developed by the University of the Philippines in Los Banos (UPLB), set up by the provincial government in Espino’s farm.
Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya said more farmers will get their free allocation of organic fertilizer for their use in their farms consistent with the province’s program on sustainable agriculture.
Moya said her was tasked by the governor to develop a scheme by which the new technology can be transferred to the farmers to make them self-reliant.
Meanwhile, Rowena de la Cruz, chief of the province’s Solid Waste Management Office, said the conversion of the chicken manure is a big boon to the province and the farmers.
The governor stressed the urgency to achieve sustainable agriculture through the adoption of organic farming in order to strengthen the fight against global warming and climate change.
The organic fertilizer costs P300 to P600 per 50-kilo bag in the market as compared to chemical-based inputs pegged at P800 to P1,100. LM
