No pork shortage in Pangasinan, say

ROSALES–An official of the Northern Luzon Hog raisers Cooperative said despite the pork shortage, Filipinos, especially Pangasinenses, can still enjoy their favorite ham and lechon this holiday season.

Engr. Rosendo So, treasurer of the group, which has more than 200 members, told local newsmen that the reported shortage was caused by the decision of some hog raisers to stop raising pigs five months ago.

He said based on their meeting with Agriculture Sec. Arthur Yap, the government will import about 5,000 metric tons of dressed meat this December to cope with the expected increase in demand during the holiday season.

He pointed out that Pangasinan will be the least affected because the province produces a lot more than the local demand.

“So this Christmas, we can still enjoy our favorite ham or lechon here,” he said.

Meanwhile, the cooperative urged the Bureau of Animal Industry to be vigilant and monitor the imported pork to avoid the spread of hog diseases.#
