LINGAYEN–New hand-held radios and wireless telephones were distributed to Pangasinan’s 1,333 barangay kapitans and the police chiefs of the 44 towns and three cities on Tuesday by the provincial government.

Governor Amado Espino Jr., who led the turnover ceremony at the Narciso Ramos Civic and Sports Center, said the communication equipment, on top of the shotguns and ambulances distributed earlier, are part of the provincial government’s effort to boost its program for peace and order.

Espino said that these gadgets are also indispensible in disaster-preparedness and emergency situations.

The first batch of recipients were the chiefs of police, Liga presidents of Districts 1 to 6, and barangay chairmen from Aguilar, Basista, Bugallon, Labrador, Binmaley, Mangatarem, Lingayen and Urbiztondo.

The hand-held radios and wireless telephones are interlinked with the offices of mayors, police stations, hospitals, provincial capitol and fire stations.

The governor said that in case of any emergency like somebody in the community needs to be brought to a hospital, the barangay official can readily call the province’s public ambulances and the hospital for immediate assistance.

The provincial government recently turned over five new and six reconditioned ambulances to the public hospitals.

At the same time, Espino warned the drivers of the public ambulances against demanding payment from patients saying this could be grounds for their summary dismissal.—LM
