WATCH out for those tarpaulins of well wishes from politicians.

Candidates who shall have filed their certificates of candidacy for the May 2010 election have been warned by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in the province against using campaign tactics before the official start of the campaign period in February.

Reddy Balarbar, provincial election supervisor, said those who will engage in premature campaigning could face disqualification.

The filing of certificate of candidacy (COC), which started Nov. 20, is ongoing until December 1.

Balarbar said he is awaiting the official guidelines from the Comelec national office about premature campaigning, including the use of  “infomercials” on tri-media and hanging tarpaulins with greetings for special celebrations like Christmas and Valentine’s Day by those who have filed their COC.

Balarbar has also advised candidates to file their COC personally given the new system for the computerized polls.

With the Candidates Information Management System in place, candidates will no longer be allowed to file for more than one national party affiliation.  However, a combination of one national party and a provincial party will still be acceptable.

Meanwhile, the Comelec provincial office is now busy preparing the new precinct assignments for the computerized polls.

Pangasinan is listed as one among provinces with the biggest number of voters in the country at 1.5 million as of end-October.#
