San Carlos suffers major agricultural losses
SAN CARLOS City–Typhoon Pepeng brought heavy damages to this agricultural city’s farms and livestock and forced many of its residents to seek shelter in evacuation centers.
City Social Welfare and Development Officer Valentina Dumangan reported that 18,461 families or 74,709 people affected by the flood.
Some 3,462 people were taken to evacuation centers set up in schools and the city gymnasium.
The city government, headed by Mayor Julier Resuello, undertook rescue operations using government-owned trucks and 2 rubber boats provided by the Philippine Marines.
City Agriculturist Estrellita Cabansag reported that the grand total in agricultural damage is at least P190 million.
This covers 3,196.5 hectares of rice land, 25.5 hectares of corn farms, 80 hectares of peanuts, 10 hectares of vegetables, and fruit-bearing trees numbering 2,801, including sweet mangoes for which the city is known for.
Fishponds of bangus and prawns were not spared as well.
City Veterinarian Solomon Gabuyan reported that the estimated cost of livestock damage is more than half a million.
Governor Amado Espino personally delivered a truckload of relief goods to the city while others who personally went to San Carlos to give help were Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla accompanied by Pangasinan 3rd District Congresswoman Rachel Arenas, Joey de Venecia, actress Susan Roces and daughter Grace Poe, and Engr. Rosendo So of the Abono Partylist.
Makati City, a sister-city of San Carlos, also sent relief goods.
Giant television networks ABS-CBN and GMA also distributed relief goods. —(CIO)
