Grand Masters join ATE’s chess tourney
LINGAYEN–Four Grand Masters and one U.S. Master are among those seeing action in the 1st Governor Amado Espino Jr. Cup Rapid Chess Championship, which fired off Saturday, October 24, and ends today, Sunday October 25, at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center.
The Grand Masters are Joey Antonio, Bong Villamayor, Mark Paragua, the youngest Asian grandmaster, and Darwin Laylo. The lone U.S. Master participating in the two-day chess classic is Marlon Bernardino.
The tournament, which has for its theme “Strive for Accuracy and Precision: Explore, Experience and Enjoy the Beauty of Chess as Art, Science and Sport”, is being participated in by over 100 chess players from Pangasinan and adjacent provinces.
Originally slated October 10 and 12, the tournament was postponed due to typhoon Pepeng.– LM
