REPRESENTATIVE Jose de Venecia Jr. and his wife Gina met with five mayors of the 4th District last week to plan for the setting up of evacuation centers in each town in the district.

The De Venecias vowed to make the establishment of “Refugee Centers” as their top priority, noting the pitiful condition of the recent flood victims who were cramped in different temporary evacuation centers.

Mrs. De Venecia said the planned refugee centers will serve as evacuation centers during the rainy season and livelihood training center for women, out-of-school youth and unemployed individuals during the dry months.

The meting agreed that the mayors will identify a suitable place in their area where the refugee center, a two-storey structure, will be built.

Mayors Alipio Fernandez Jr. of Dagupan City, Herminio Romero of Mangaldan, Mojamito Libunao of San Fabian, Rodolfo Columbres of San Jacinto and Napoleon Sales of Manaoag pledged their support to the project.

“If there is one refugee center in each town, evacuees need not crowd cramped school houses that are converted as instant evacuation centers,” Rep. De Venecia said.

The Department of Education now prohibits the use of schools as evacuation centers.

The refugee center will be big enough to provide clean comfort rooms with bath, kitchen and wash areas for the comfort and convenience of evacuees.–LM
