ROSALES–A novel ‘Cellphone Bin Collection’ project was launched by SM City Rosales last week, simultaneous with all SM Supermalls across the nation.

The project, undertaken in partnership with cellphone manufacturer Nokia and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), aims to collect owners’ disposed cellphone parts electronic devices, cellphone housing, batteries and chargers, etc., for proper disposal or possible recycling.

The project is in pursuant to Republic Act No. 6969 or “An act to control toxic substances and ha-zardous and nuclear wastes” which could pose danger to the environment.

Discarded electronic devices (or eWaste) now form a large portion of the world’s garbage with the fast development of new technology.

Cellphone owners are urged the people to visit any SM branch and bring with their electronic wastes to the marked bins for recycling and for proper disposal.

Guest speakers during the launching in Rosales were Zeny Cortez, senior Environmental Specialist of the DENR and Rosales Mayor Ricardo Revita.—LM
