Lingayen Gulf war memorial updated
LINGAYEN–The updated World War II historical panels displayed at the Pangasinan Veterans Park in Lingayen was unveiled on Tuesday by the provincial government and the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB).
The updated historical panels, funded by the PVB, contain photographs, a time line and paintings focusing on events in Pangasinan and the US forces landing in the Lingayen Gulf.
The inauguration, coinciding with the celebration of the World Tourism Week, was attended by leaders of the veterans’ chapters in Pangasinan.
Gov. Amado Espino Jr., Vice Governor Marlyn Primicias-Agabas and Ricardo Balbido, PVB president and chief executive officer, led the activity, which also featured songs, folk dances and a short stage play on patriotism.
Balbido said the historical panels are significant tributes to the Filipino freedom fighters who participated and supported the historic landing of the allied forces nearly 65 years ago at the Lingayen Beach under the command of General Douglas MacArthur.
Meanwhile, Espino hailed the depiction of the graphic accounts and expression of the veterans’ great love of country, acts of valor, self-sacrifice and heroism in the panels.
“Just like our forefathers who were willing to die for our country, we must wage war against those who may wish to destroy our land, forest, rivers and environment, our moral and cultural values,” Espino said. —LM
