‘Kontra Boga’ campaign gains in region, amnesty on
LA UNION–The Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) has reported that 130 loose firearms have been confiscated from organized crime groups within the period July 1 to September 3 under the Philippine National Police’s ‘Kontra Boga‘ campaign.
Chief Supt. Ramon Gatan, PRO1 regional director, said the loose firearms were seized through various police-initiated operations, including the carrying out of search warrants, setting up checkpoints and response to calls for police assistance.
The total number exceeded the three percent monthly target.
“Given that PRO1 has been tasked to account for 181 loose firearms, our overall accomplishment rate now stands at 71.82% after only about two months of aggressive campaign,” he said.
Meanwhile, in support of the National Firearms Control Program, PRO1 is also implementing LOI 49/09 known as ‘Bilang Boga’, to account for firearms with expired licenses and those unregistered in the possession of ordinary citizens, and to conduct an inventory of firearms held by government agencies, including firearms under ‘custodia legis’.
‘Bilang Boga’ has so far resulted in the accounting/inventory of 881 assorted firearms in various government entities and private security agencies in Region 1.
On the implementation of the gun amnesty program, Gatan said that as of September 3, PRO1 has received 294 applications (228 applications for firearms license renewal and 66 applications for firearms registration).
PRO1 personnel are conducting house visitations and sending notification letters to firearm holders with un-renewed firearms licenses.
The gun amnesty program ends October 31. #
