Barba showcases river garbage collector
WHY not grab some garbage while enjoying a Jet Ski ride or on a boat to catch some fish?
This would be possible with the recent invention of Senior Superintendent Percival Barba, provincial police director, which is a floating garbage collector.
Barba demonstrated a prototype of the machine on Friday along the Pantal River in Dagupan.
Barba, in an interview with The PUNCH, said this initiative is part of his contribution to environment protection by encouraging fishermen on their motorized banca and the rich on their jet ski to help clean up the rivers.
Barba said his invention is open for adoption by others, and that the design can be modified for particular needs and the materials available.
Barba’s floating garbage collector, which he said can be built for less than P1,000, can be made from either bamboo poles or PVC pipes with attached recycled nets that can trap floating garbage while being pulled by a water transport.
He said his invention, intended to collect floating trash, complements the Escubasurero program initiated by Philippine National Police Chief Director General Jesus Verzosa wherein he dives to collect garbage underwater.
Leduina Co, provincial environment and natural resources officer of Pangasinan, told The PUNCH in a separate interview that she was impressed by Barba’s creation which can gather as much as 120 kilos of trash.
She said she will encourage local government units with coastal waters to adopt it.#
