80 firms in BIR watchlist
AFTER shutting down the operations of eight drug stores of Jan Mark Corporation in Pangasinan, Teodulo Paragas, chief of the Special Investigation Division of the BIR Regional Office, said about 80 more establishments, most of which are located in Pangasinan, remain in the watchlist.
The closure order for the drug stores issued last week by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) under Operation Kandado, remains effective at presstime after the company failed to settle its tax deficiencies.
Paragas said advisory letters have been sent out to the listed establishments informing them of their tax liabilities to give them a chance to settle these with the BIR before closure orders are issued.
Those who will fail to respond to the BIR’s notice will be forcibly closed by the government, under its Operation Kandado program, based on the 1977 Tax Code of the Philippines.
In the case of Jan Mark drugstores, Paragas said the company was given five days by the BIR after closure within which to settle its tax deficiencies before the closure order can be lifted.
Paragas declined to disclose the value of Jan Mark’s tax deficiencies.
Jan Mark is a chain of drug stores with three branches in Urdaneta City, two in Lingayen and one each in Alaminos City, Mangaldan and Tayug.
Earlier, five popular restaurants in Pangasinan were also temporarily closed down by BIR for failure to declare and pay the correct amount of taxes. All five have since reopened after settling their dues within 5 days which totaled about P4.5 million. —LM
