URDANETA CITY–Cash prizes are up for grabs for homes and barangays here with the best backyard vegetable gardens.

The Backyard Vegetable Gardening contest, launched recently to provide additional incentive to the communities to pursue self-reliance in food production, will reward household winners with P30,000, P20,000 and P10,000 for the first, second and third prizes, respectively and P5,000 each for the next10 qualifiers.

Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said this is part of their Tulungan sa Purok Program which sets 10 households per barangay that will plant at least five varieties of vegetables commonly used for the pinakbet dish in at least 100 square meters of plot for a minimum of five varieties of vegetables.

An additional P5,000 prize will be given to the winning barangays from Mayor Kimi Cojuangco of neighboring Sison town and Engr. Rosendo So, chairman of the partylist ABONO.

The local government distributed vegetable seeds, seedlings for red lady papaya and malunggay, and organic fertilizer to the barangays for the contest.

The gardens will be checked in September and November, and the awarding is scheduled on December 30.

The annual Tulungan sa Purok, started in the 1980s, aims to clean, beautify and encourage backyard food production in the city.  Winning barangays are given P.5 million worth of projects by the city government.#
