Students have no love for Batman this time
The Batman craze is definitely over for the students and teachers of the University of Pangasinan High School.
The icon of the creatures lost his fans after an undetermined number of bats are suspected to have settled in an abandoned warehouse on Nable Street near UPang and the stench from their accumulated droppings has caused many to suffer nausea and discomfort.
U-Pang High School Principal Benjamin Busel said he already brought the matter to the attention of Mr. Tan Bun Pin, the owner of the abandoned warehouse, on several occasions about need for a more permanent and effective clearing of the bats.
“The owner cleared the warehouse last year and the putrid smell receded. However, the foul smell has become more intense over the past weeks,” Busel complained.
Tan Bun Pin Company representatives declined to comment, but asserted that they cannot smell the putrid odor complained about in the company’s vicinity.
“How can they smell it, naka-aircon sila sa loob ng office,” came Busel’s retort.
Ronald Fernandez, a high school instructor, said the stink seems to be stronger when the sun is shining. He surmised that moisture from the waste evaporates and most of the time, the wind blows towards the direction of the school.
Students are left with no choice but to endure the nauseating odor as they cover their noses and mouths with their hands during classes.
“Elementary students are mostly affected. Dahil mga bata, hindi maka-adopt and araw-araw distracted sa pag-aaral,” Fernandez said.
Some children suffering from asthma had to be brought to the Pangasinan Medical Center since the malodorous scent made it difficult for them to breath normally.
PMC’s Administrative Officer, Vilma Paragas, attested to the foul smell, although she cannot ascertain where it is coming from.
The Barangay Pantal council has not officially raised the issue with the warehouse owners.—Sunshine Erfe-Mallary
