DAGUPAN CITY will soon have its own drug rehabilitation center to be operated by the Region 1 Medical Center of the Department of Health.

R1MC Chief Dr. Roland Mejia said the rehab center will initially cater to out-patients while in-patients will be accommodated as soon as the center’s two dormitories and recreation facilities are completed.

The facility, to be called Dona Teodora Manaois Drug Rehabilitation Center in honor of the late matriarch of a family that donated the land for the project, will serve drug patients in the province.

Mejia said Assistant Secretary Elmer Punzalan, head of special concerns of the DOH, is set to arrive in Dagupan this week to inspect the progress of the construction of the facility in Barangay Bonuan Binloc.

He said R1MC staff is ready to undergo a refresher course at the Regional Drug Rehab Center in Taguig, Metro Manila.

The Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), the regulating body, will supervise the center but administrative operation will be handled solely by the R1MC.

The funding for the project was allocated by 4th District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. from his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAP).

Councilor Jesus Canto, former R1MC chief, said the establishment of the drug rehab center was planned more than two years ago while he was still the director of the hospital.

He proposed to R1MC to retain the name of Doña Teodora Manaois used for the former hospital in the same location.—LM
