THE Department of Education is pushing for the promotion of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) by integrating ICT in the existing curriculum.

One program that was introduced at the Dagupan City National High School last August 5, tagged as ICT for Education: Intro to Learning Technology and Internet Connectivity, an orientation for all public high school students conducted by the Special Assistant to the Secretary, Elcid Pangilinan.

A presentation by British Council Jansen Mayor, the program manager, on the introduction to learning technologies was shown.

DCNHS Principal Erly Dalatario said the program does not intend to get rid of chalk and blackboard use, but to enhance the quality of education using ICT.

DepEd has also introduced and installed a system allowing schools in different parts of the country to teleconference for the sharing of best practices.

Dalatario said the system allows students to chat with each other regarding lessons. “This is still one of the best ways to learn – students learning among themselves. Teachers are just facilitators,” he added.

Teachers of participating schools have also been granted an individual DepEd email account using “@deped.gov.ph”.

Coordinators gave a demonstration on the activation of email accounts.

Dr. Ligaya Soledad Miguel of CESO III Director IV thanked both the participants for their support for the program and DepEd for introducing a program that will benefit public school students and employees.

DCNHS has been granted P48,000 to cover a one year internet connection service.
