City hall bent on restoring sidewalks
THE Dagupan City government is determined to reclaim the lost sidewalk on Arellano Street, illegally expropriated for private use by owners of commercial establishments and residential houses.
The Sidewalk Recovery Program (SRP) was launched by the city on Arellano-Bani with the completion of the upgrading of the Arellano Street.
The SRP seeks to provide a two-meter side walk on each side of Arellano Street.
The Dagupan City Engineering Office has already issued notices to property owners by delineating the required two meter-sidewalk in front of their establishments and houses.
The Dagupan City Water District (DWD), for example, has already responded by transferring some water meter stands outside the two-meter area.
This requires affected property owners to reconfigure their frontage layout and the process had many owners complaining about the costs.
“Hindi pabor sa amin kasi gumastos kami para sa mga naglalakad papuntang Nepo,” laments Grace Coquia, a tenant ofthe 20-year old Blossoms and Lace Building, who was made to share in the costs of reconstruction of the frontage.
The City Engineering Office has reportedly promised partial reimbursement to the affected property owners but City Engineer Virginia Rosario clarified that, “Wala pa namang compromise agreement, but the city government is willing to pay if the fund is available.”—Sunshine Erfe-Mallary
