PRISAA-UCAAP ’09 caging opens July 24
THE much-awaited Private Schools Athletic Association-Universities Colleges Athletic Association of Pangasinan (PRISAA-UCAAP) Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championship, originally scheduled to open on July 20, will start on July 24 at the Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) gym.
Seato Gonimil, PRISAA Region 1 treasurer, said the date for the opening of the annual tourney, also dubbed as “Mayor Al Fernandez Jr. Cup” was reset on the request of Philippine Sports Commission chairman Harry Angpin who will be the guest of honor and speaker during the opening ceremony.
Atty. Gonzalo Duque, PRISAA national chairman and LNU president, will formally open the meet.
Led by defending champion and multi-titled the UL Golden Tigers to be steered anew by Renato “Jack” Vidal, the boys of councilor Chito Samson is expected to encounter another stiff battle against last year’s runner-up LNU Dukes and 2005 titlist and now Phinma-owned the University of Pangasinan Webczars.
Other squads seeing action are AIE Commerce College, Colegio de Dagupan, Pangasinan Merchant Marine Academy, Pangasinan Institute of Marine Studies and Technology, AMA Computer School, Pangasinan State University.
The team of the PanPacific University North Philippines (PUNP) in Urdaneta City, the 2008 Universities Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA) champion, was also invited but has yet to confirm its participation.
“PRISAA Pangasinan-Dagupan president Art Tangco invited the eastern Pangasinan champion PUNP squad to the league and to make it more competitive,” Gonimil said. —JAG, Jr.
