TAYUG–The head of the Tayug National High School (TNHS) defended the collection of additional fees from students as above board.

Parents have questioned the fees, which they pointed out is against the policy of the Department of Education.

Marilyn Bautista, the school principal, said the P8.75 monthly fee that every student is required to pay is authorized by the Parents Teachers and Community Association (PTCA) through a resolution passed in 2006, and insists it remains in effect.

The collection, she added, is used to pay for the salary of an additional security guard and electric consumption of the school.

She said the school needs an additional guard to be on duty for eight hours to secure an area at the back of the campus that students use to exit to skip classes and intruders may use as an entry point.

Salaries of two security guards are in the regular budget of the school.

As for the power consumption, Bautista said the school’s Maintenance Operating and Other Expenses (MOOE) budget provided by the Department of Education is not enough to pay for electric bills.—LM
