Possible wage hike this year hinted

The labor force in the region may yet celebrate an early Christmas this year.

An official of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP), Pangasinan Chapter expressed the view that there may be a need to adjust the wages of workers in the Ilocos Region this year.

Salvador “Ed” Poserio, ECOP chapter president, said the adjustment may be possible since the one year prescription of Wage Order No. 13 promulgated by the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board (RTWPB) will lapse this month.

RTWPB can only adjust the wage of workers once a year.

Speaking during the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP) Forum in Dagupan City, Poserio who represented the employers sector in the  RTWPB that promulgated Wage Order No. 13 last year, agreed that there may be a need for the board to meet soon to discuss possible adjustment of the workers’ basic pay.

The RTWPB in the Ilocos Region is headed by Department of Labor and Employment Regional Director Henry John Jalbuena with representatives from the workers’ sector and the employers’ sector.

Poserio, chief executive officer of the Dagupan-based Chimes Enterprises, maintained that wage increase seeks to restore to the workers’  their  lost purchasing power as a result of the present economic crisis, which he believes to continue till 2012.

He admitted that the possibility of holding another public consultation to find out on whether the employers in Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte can grant a new wage increase to their workers, is being discussed inside RTWPB.–LM
