IF President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo cannot run for reelection, she can always seek the second highest position of the land.

“Palagay ko puwede ito,” said Dr. Salvador Duque, chancellor of their family-owned Lyceum-Northwestern University.

“When you have a good leader, it is good to see that he or she is still there,” said Duque, elder brother of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, in his talk before the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas on Thursday.

“Vice President is the number 2 man in the republic, malakas ka at makaka-relax ka pa because it is the President who attends to public functions and affairs of the state,” he said.

“We are lucky because we have many good leaders who are still around, like President Fidel Ramos, President Joseph Estrada, even Corazon Aquino and of course President Arroyo,” said Duque, co-chairman of the Regional Development Council and chancellor of the Association of Private Schools Colleges and Universities in Region 1.

“Service to the nation and people must never end in our lifetime,” he added.

Duque also said he does not see anything wrong if Arroyo runs for Congress in her native Pampanga as long as this is in service to the country and people.

Duque, who believes Arroyo has proven to be one of the country’s best presidents, said that it is only under her administration that the poor are getting direct assistance from the government in terms of food tickets as well as under the Philippine Health Insurance program.—LM
