LINGAYEN–The province’s chess wizards who emerged victorious at the recently concluded 10th Asean Age Group Chess Championship held in Vietnam, paid a courtesy call last Monday on Governor Amado Espino Jr. who hailed them as among Pangasinan’s pride.
Gold medalist Cherry Ann Mejia, a 14, high school student at Colegio de San Juan de Letran from San Jacinto town; Samantha Glo Revita, 9, from Rosales and Dennis Gutierrez Jr., 8, from San Fabian town, silver and bronze medalist received commendations from Espino and other provincial officials.
The children also received additional cash incentive from the province aside from the P25,000 each provided to them prior to their flight to Vietnam .
Espino said the children’s chess talents are particularly impressive considering that they are all “trained at home” by their guardians and parents.
With already 50 medals tucked under her belt, Mejia, who started playing chess at the age of nine, snatched gold medal in the 9-round standard cross-table chess in the 14-years- and-below category.

Meanwhile, Revita received a special commendation from the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for winning multiple medals in the same chess competition. She started playing chess at the age of three.
A consistent honor student from Rosales North Central School, Revita, who already hauled 18 medals from national and international chess tournaments, placed second and third in the 7-round cross-table rapid chess and 7-round standard cross-table chess games respectively.
The province’s youngest chess wizard, Gutierrez, a grade two pupil at the Stella Maris Academy, also won games that made him 7th placer in the 9-rounds standard cross-table and 7-rounds rapid chess.
Espino pledged his continuous support to the chess champions and added that the youth and development program of the province will always assist the Pangasinan youth in developing their skills and talents in sports.
